Realizing you need to make changes in your life and getting to the point where you make those changes can be a long road. People seem to look for the quick fix like a get-rich-quick scheme. Making changes that affect your life shouldn’t be a scheme. Lifetime changes take commitment and dedication to a plan you develop for yourself. These five tips will help you get started on your path.

1. Commit to your decision to change your life

Commit to Changing Your Life

Make a commitment and develop a plan to reach your goals in small obtainable measures. Write your plan down so you can see what you want to change. Talk to a spouse, family member, friend, or support group and share your plan to make changes in your life. Build your support system.

2. Develop and expand on your plan

Decide what you need to help you succeed.

Break your plan up into different areas of your life (mental, physical, emotional, spiritual, and social), and focus on what you want to change in each specific area. What goals do you have for each area? What tools, resources, or support will you need to help you make those changes in each area? Define what these things are and how you will get them. Will you need to shop for different foods? Will you need a gym membership or equipment to work out at home? Planning allows you to know what you can afford to start with and what you will need to get the rest.

3. Begin with the small, simple changes first, don’t overwhelm yourself

Goals for change, plan for change
Small Steps will lead to big changes

Look at each part of your plan, what are the simplest things that you can change first? Is your current activity level stagnant? Start with just getting out for a walk for 30 minutes each day. Say daily affirmations to yourself to help your mental health and mood. Meditate, stretch, and cut back/out on unhealthy foods. These are small first steps that can help start you off on the right foot of your journey.

4. Don’t look for drastic changes in the beginning

Don’t compare yourself to others

Don’t let yourself get deterred if your goal is to lose weight and improve your health and you don’t see immediate changes. Some people will see changes just from making those first small changes in their life. Most will begin to see changes, but they don’t have to be dramatic. Every change is a win no matter how big or small. This is a long-term plan and you need to stay focused on the end game.

5. Stay Committed

Don’t lose focus, stay committed to yourself

This plan is to change the overall health of your life. There are lots of parts to it and it will be difficult at times. Having the right tools, nutrition, and supplements to take care of your body is essential. Staying committed, having support, and keeping up motivation is key to being successful.
